Rural Pounds
May. 9th, 2015 09:31 pmSomeone remarked to me last week (about Gundagai): "Such a small town, how can there be so many homeless dogs?"
It's a good question and I used to wonder that myself. ( Read more... )On top of that, there are a lot of unethical rescues around. Pounds can have been burnt in the past and don't want to deal with them anymore Some pounds will only work through one rescue group.
I haven't been in rescue that long but I've seen the difference it makes to have a good ranger in charge who cares about the dogs and is willing to work with rescue. The rangers don't get much praise or recognition for what they do unfortunately - which is a shame, but they should. Rangers that help meet transport, take photos, try to see whether a dog is friendly with people or other dogs - these sorts of people are invaluable.
I like to pull from the rural pounds because not only do they need us most, but they have a lot of the dogs that I like. There are a lot of Kelpies and Kelpie mixes in those pounds - good dogs who just need a chance. I have helped with transport options for the Canberra/Queanbeyan dogs and I do know that dogs there still do get put down, but they do have more of a chance than the rural poundies.
Here's a list of all the pounds in Australia.
