Today was a very busy and exhausting day - I'm still very drained from the interstate work trip from earlier this week, so there aren't any new photos of Frida - but we made some good progress with her today.

I can tell Frida's very smart so have wanted to start formally training her but didn't want to do this until I got her food sorted out. Her appetite has been improving by the day and we added some wet food to her kibble which she seems to LOVE. I guess kibble gets a bit boring so some tasty wet food (My Dog Puppy and Nature's Gift) made it all interesting and new for her.

As she had eaten so well today, tonight I used some kibble and low fat cheese to see how she would go with some basic training.

Here are her first attempts at sit, shake hands and spin. She ALMOST gets the shake hands - I can tell she is on the brink of understanding what I want from her. Her eyes are very intelligent and I know that before long, she'll have mastered these three commands.

Frida did well last night, she squeaked at me at 2am and then again at 6am to be taken outside to be toileted. She was very prompt both times about toileting and didn't dawdle. She also went right back to sleep after I put her back in her crate. She's so little - it's like holding a little kitten in your arms as I carry her back through the house to her crate which we have put up on a basket next to the bed so that she is near us and can see us. Mostly she's quiet, but sometimes she cries and seems to panic a little. I follow the rules and ignore her but put my fingertips into the crate so that she can sniff and lick them and know that she's not alone in the dark.

Dan says she ate well today - finishing all of her kibble. She also had her first chicken wing - it took her ages to eat because her teeth are so tiny but she loved it and chewed down with great gusto. Her little tummy was so fat and round when she was done, it was very cute. I spent ages outside with her afterwards because I was worried about the impending toileting ... She was good tonight, though. Only two very mini-wees inside, otherwise she's been toileting outside. Some pictures from today. Read more... )

Deceptively angelic :) She's a strong-minded little miss. She was good again last night. I had set my alarm clock to wake up every 3 hours but she gives me a squeak and a squawk when she wants to be taken out and toileted We went to bed at midnight, she squeaked at about 2.30 am and then again at about 6 or so. Then she goes back to sleep, which is nice.

She's getting bolder with Elbie and Hoover - chasing them. Elbie tells her off for being annoying but just with a growl and then leaves. Hoover endures a LOT more but this morning she grabbed his ear and tried to pull it so he growled at her and she backed off. You can tell by her eyes that she's smart - oh but with so much potential for naughtiness.

Arriving on Saturday will be a six week old border collie puppy.

Left is Frida who will be coming into care with us. We weren't intending to do any more fostering until the new year but this was an emergency. Too young to leave their mama dog, but alas there's no help for it.

Sleepless nights, poo and wee ahead of us ...
