The dogs of 9/11
Aug. 31st, 2012 09:53 pmI love reading about those incredibly brave dogs.
Here is a wonderful article about the 12 dogs who are still alive.
The 9/11 rescue dogs: Portraits of the last surviving animals who scoured Ground Zero one decade on. There are some beautiful, beautiful photos of some beautiful animals. They are old but they're still gorgeous.
Then there's this very brief photo montage of the dogs of 9/11:
I know I'm a crazy dog lady, but I really do believe that humans and dogs have an amazing bond. Dan who is a cat person remarked that there should be an article about the cats who helped out during 9/11, but that's the thing - they wouldn't have, but dogs are attuned to humans in a way that's quite unfathomable sometimes.

Fosters of Others: Seth

This unusual-looking fellow is Seth. He was rescued as a puppy but then surrendered by his owners when he killed chickens. ( Read more... )

This lovely lady is Matilda the Cattle Dog. Dan was particularly taken with her - he loved her raccoon tail, her soft fur and her googoo eyes. She was very photogenic. Unfortunately, she was deaf which made it very hard to place her. ( Read more... )
Fosters of Others: Santa
Aug. 31st, 2012 10:13 pmThis is dear Santa, we met him on 31 October 2010 where he was being fostered by Kate after being dumped by his heartless owners at the pound in Canberra. It was very sad for us to see such a friendly old guy being dumped at the pound. We made this video:

I think Delta was one of the first pit bulls that Dan and I met. I am not a bull breed person but Delta had such serenity and calmness to her and she really made see that this much-maligned breed of dog is very beautiful and can be gentle and a wonderful family member when with the right owner. Fosters of Others: Smudge & Blossom
Aug. 31st, 2012 10:17 pmBefore we started fostering ourselves, we dipped our toes in rescue by making donations and also making music videos for the doggies. Dan always takes the photos and I film the doggies and put the music videos together. As these were dogs that other people were fostering, it was always much harder to get a sense of their personality so we'd visit, pat them, hang around them just to see what they were like. There have been many, many dogs but there will always be a few who live a lasting impression. ( Read more... )
Yesterday I took Nova for a walk after work. He walked beautifully on a lead at my left - not too much pulling. He was unfussed by noisy cars with head lights. We stood by a busy road and he watched people playing a night time soccer game at the local oval. Then he accompanied Dan out the front to empty the garbage and showed no signs of straying off or bolting. ( Read more... )
