It seems a good time to update on the mandatory behaviours that I expect foster doggies to have before they leave foster care and get adopted out.
Progress Table after Day 12 (Mandatory Behaviours)
Optional behaviours:
Sit and drop

Progress Table after Day 12 (Mandatory Behaviours)
House-training | Almost there although still has the occasional accident in the evenings |
Doorway etiquette | Humans through doorways first. Has the reverse problem of being skittish around doorways |
Car travel | OK with wearing a harness and travelling in a car still terrified of going to the car though and has to be picked up |
Mealtime manners | Still skittish but is eating out of my hand. She needs to be at the point where she waits for food and makes eye contact |
Basic focus work (Watch), sit and drop | Can lure into a sit and a drop |
Go to your mat/crate/bed | Sleeping well in a crate and in a dog bed. Haven't trained her to be sent to the crate yet although she is getting there and will go to her crate/bed if I point. Will try it with a verbal cue next |
1-2 camera-friendly tricks | Teaching a spin and a shake hands next |
Assess friendliness/neutrality | Very friendly. No signs of aggro. Very skittish around strange people. |
Assess other behaviours | Very destructive and naughty. Fine around the washing machine, electric mixer, vacuum cleaner, clippers etc. Happy to be handled and brushed if you can get her - she still tends to run away. Gradually learning an off-switch although still tends to pace and be restless. Much, much better than she was though. |
Optional behaviours:
Sit-Stay | Useful and nice to have |
Drop-stay | Useful and nice to have |
Recall | Emma says people are likely to ask about off-leash recall |
Loose leash walking | Hard given that this is still a work in progress for my two! |
Slightly more complex trick | Rollover, speak, dead, wave, are you shy etc |
Sit and drop
